Everything buyers ask, answered straight.
Pricing, site prep, permits, steel, and financing — answered in full, nothing folded away. Including the ones where the honest answer is that it depends on your county and no web page can tell you. Those are the ones worth reading.
Pricing & ordering
What a building costs, what moves the number, and what you can change.
How much does a metal building cost?
Carports start at $1,695, steel sheds at $3,655, garages at $5,370, and barns at $9,985. Those are starting prices for the smallest building in each family, and the price for yours moves with its size, its style, the roof you choose, and how far it has to travel.
Why is my quote different from the price on the website?
Because the price on a product page is a base price. Our pricing disclaimer says so directly: the initial quote you receive is just the base price. The total depends on the steel market when you order, your distance from the manufacturer, the size and style, the roof, any customization, whether the building is certified, and whether you add insulation. We will always work to give you the most accurate quote possible, and we go through each of those with you before you decide.
Can I customize my metal building?
Yes — the roof style, the size, the colors, doors, windows, anchors, and certification are all yours to specify. Each addition affects the price, so tell us what the building is for and we will price the combination you actually need rather than the longest list.
What is the tallest steel building I can order?
Our RV covers go up to 14 feet, and there are select buildings that can be built as high as 20 feet. Height is worth settling on a call, because on an enclosed building the eave height decides more about what fits inside than the floor area does.
Do you sell metal building kits I can put up myself?
Yes. Kits come pre-punched and pre-cut so you can erect the building yourself, and our disclaimer is direct about why people choose them: if you have construction skills and experience, erecting your own steel building can save thousands of dollars.
See the kit rangeWhy buy from Steel Carports instead of ordering direct from a factory?
We work with a network of manufacturers across the United States, so rather than one factory's catalog you get the one whose price and reach suit your project. Delivery and installation are included in the price in the states we serve, and the building is specified with you rather than picked off a shelf.
Site & foundation
The part that is yours to arrange, and what has to be ready before we arrive.
How do I prepare my property before my metal building is installed?
Choose the spot and stake it out, then clear the area of weeds, grass, and debris. The building needs a flat, level area to sit on, and if you are pouring concrete the slab should be staked slightly larger than the building on every side. Ask us for the exact slab dimensions for your model before the pour — it is much easier to get right the first time.
Do you pour the concrete or do the foundation work?
No. Our pricing disclaimer puts it plainly: we do not provide groundwork or any foundation work, and to have it done you need to pay a local contractor nearby. Budget for it separately — it is not part of the building price.
Does the ground have to be level?
Yes, and providing a flat, level area is the buyer's part of the job. The frame is square, so what it sits on has to be. If your site slopes, a local contractor levels it or pours a slab before the crew arrives.
Can my building go on gravel, asphalt, or dirt instead of concrete?
The anchors are matched to what the building is being installed on, and they are part of the order rather than an afterthought. Tell us the surface when you order and the right anchors are specified for it. If the building is being certified, the anchors are part of what that certification is designed around.
What if the weather is bad, or my site is hard to get to?
Either can add cost, and the disclaimer says so: installers face problems during erection if your area has bad weather, and the extra labor is charged for. Difficult access works the same way. Flag anything unusual about the site when you order and it gets priced up front instead of on the day.
Delivery & installation
What is included, where we go, and how the schedule gets set.
Is delivery and installation included in the price?
Yes — delivery and installation are included in the price in the states we serve. Site work is not: the ground, the slab, and any permits are yours to arrange.
Check your stateWhich states do you deliver to?
We serve 40 states. Distance from the nearest manufacturer affects the price, which is why two identical buildings can be quoted differently in two states.
See the coverage mapHow long does it take to get my building after I order?
It depends on which manufacturer is building yours, the specification, and where it is going, so the schedule is confirmed with you when the order is placed rather than promised off a web page. Ask on the call and you will get the timing for your build.
What do I need to have ready on installation day?
A flat, level, cleared area, and a way to reach it. Anything the crew has to work around costs labor, so a slope, a fence line, or soft ground after rain is cheaper to sort out before the truck is scheduled than on the day it arrives.
Permits & certification
What certification is, when it is required, and who decides.
Do I need a permit for a metal building?
It depends on where you are, and it is worth finding out before you order. Our disclaimer is explicit that local building codes vary from one area to another and that you should make sure you know yours. Your city or county building office is the only authority on what your property needs — call them, then tell us what they said and we will build to it.
What is a certified metal building, and how is it different from a non-certified one?
A certified building is designed to meet the local building codes that apply where it is going, with the gauge, roof style, and foundation anchors all taken into account, and it is engineered to stand up to heavy precipitation and strong winds. A non-certified building is not required to meet those standards. Some areas legally require certification, which is the reason to ask your building office before you order rather than after.
Does certification cost extra?
Yes. Certification changes what the building has to be engineered to, so it changes the price — it is one of the factors listed in our pricing disclaimer for exactly that reason.
What wind speed and snow load is my building rated for?
That comes from the code your jurisdiction enforces, not from us — and it is not a single number you can look up by county, because it depends on which standard applies and how your site is classified. A certified building is engineered to the figures your area enforces. Tell us what your building office requires and the building is designed to it.
Can you provide drawings for my permit application?
Certification is an option you add to the order, and what a building office asks to see varies from one jurisdiction to the next. Tell us what yours requires when you call and we will go through what the certified package covers for your area.
Steel, roof & options
Gauge, roofline, colors, insulation, and the warranty behind them.
What is the difference between 12-gauge and 14-gauge steel framing?
Gauge measures thickness, and the higher the number the thinner the steel — so 12-gauge is thicker and stronger than 14-gauge. If you want economical framing that does not have to carry heavy wind or snow, 14-gauge is a good option. For more strength, 12-gauge is the better choice, and it is the framing our 20-year warranty applies to.
Is there a warranty on the building?
All of our 12-gauge steel buildings come with a 20-year warranty, and if your building fails at any time within that period we replace it free of charge.
Which roof style should I choose?
There are three: regular, A-frame horizontal, and A-frame vertical. Vertical is the one most often recommended — it puts more steel framing in the unit and runs the panels from the ridge down to the eave, so rain, sleet, and snow slide off instead of sitting on the roof. It is designed for inclement weather, and it costs more than a horizontal or regular roof for that reason.
How far apart are the frame legs and roof trusses?
Typically 4 to 5 feet on center for single-wide buildings up to about 12 feet wide, and for double-wide buildings up to 24 feet wide. On a triple-wide building the legs and trusses run closer together. If you need exact measurements, call us and we will give you the numbers for your building.
What colors are available?
Thirteen colors, and every one is available for the roof, the walls, and the trim. Run a single color across the whole building or specify each separately, and we will send samples once you have it narrowed down.
See all 13 colorsCan I add insulation to my metal building?
Yes, and it is fitted as the building is assembled rather than added afterward, so it belongs on the order. It also affects the price — insulation is one of the factors listed in our pricing disclaimer.
How insulation worksCan I add doors, windows, or close in the walls?
All of them are options on the order — doors, windows, and closing in some or all of the sides. Specifying them up front is simpler than working them in later, so it is worth deciding what the building has to do before it is built.
What kind of steel are these buildings made from?
American-made galvanized steel tubing for the frame, with steel panels over it.
How long will a metal building last?
The number worth holding us to is the warranty: 12-gauge buildings carry a 20-year warranty, and if the building fails inside that window we replace it free of charge. Anything past that is a guess, and we would rather give you the guarantee than the guess.
Financing & rent-to-own
The published requirements for both, and what the dealer sets instead.
Can I finance a metal building?
Yes. The published requirements are that you own your home, have a credit score of 595 or above, can put 10% down, and can send a driver's license plus verifiable income. How much you can borrow depends on the building: up to $25,000 for a portable shed, up to $50,000 for a garage or building on your property, and up to $350,000 for a commercial building, with more available case by case.
Check if you qualifyDo you offer rent-to-own, and do you run a credit check?
We do, and there is no credit check. It is month to month with no long lock-in, and you can pay it off whenever you like. Rent-to-own does not use an interest rate — the payment is worked out from the building's price and the length of the agreement — and your initial payment and schedule come from the dealer, in writing.
How rent-to-own worksIs there a penalty for paying my building off early?
No. There is no penalty for paying your metal building off early on either financing or rent-to-own — settle the balance and you are done.
How much do I need to put down?
Financing is published as requiring 10% down. Rent-to-own takes an initial payment instead, and that amount is set by the dealer and confirmed with you in writing before anything is signed.
Still not sure? Ask a building specialist.
Some of it genuinely depends on your county, your site, and what the building is for. Tell us those three things and you will get a straight answer and a real price.
